Yearbook Preparations

The Clubs in the The Garden Club of Indiana produced some very good yearbooks this last year.  Some of them received impressive scoring from National Garden Clubs, Inc. This article is intended to provide information to help improve a Club’s prospects for receiving an award.  Criteria for judging yearbooks is provided in The Garden Club of Indiana, Inc.’s Awards Manual dated September 2004.  Judging is done by a committee of three State Board Members.

While yearbooks are prepared primarily for member use, if your club’s intent is to enter their yearbook for an award, these suggestions may be helpful.

1. Books should be attractive, on durable paper, neat and well organized.

2. All affiliate organizations (district, state, region, NGC, other) should be listed on the title page. National Garden Clubs, Inc. is the official name of our national affiliate.

3. Programs are judged upon the quality and balance of programs. Consider how programs further NGC goals and objectives, i.e. programs on birds, butterflies, horticulture.

4. Projects are judged upon the scope of  projects.  Projects involve actual membership participation that benefit the community and further NGC Goals and Objectives (does not include fund-raising or social activities).  Give a brief word description of projects; who benefits, location, how community benefits, how members are expected to participate, chairman, etc.  List donations; amount, in-kind donations, to whom, sales of state/NGC products.

5. List Continuing and New Participating Projects.  Clubs are not required to have new projects.  There is no required format to list projects.  Projects may be separated by double spacing, numbering, using bullets, bold face type, etc.

6. Listing percentage of participation is no longer required.

7. Referring to a project(s) on program page is not required.

I hope you have inspiring programs planned for the coming year.
