NGC High School Speech Contest 


2005-2006 "A Patriotic Garden"
Describe ways in which you can plant a patriotic garden. This could be done by planting a Community garden or Historical site or by educating people of the importance of showing their patriotism through plants. 

2006-2007 "Preserve the World's Delicate Tapestry" Explain the importance of environmental concerns - atmosphere, rain forests, rivers, oceans, etc.   

Length of Speech: Between 6-9 minutes. Sponsoring club should supply tape (not VCR) and manuscript. Students should be provided an opportunity to deliver their speech to a live audience for local and, if possible, state judging. Notes may be used. Please Read Rules and Point Scoring. 

Scale of Points

Content,   55: Conform to Topic 15; Knowledge of Subject 10; Practicality of Proposal 10; Creativity-Originality 10; Conformance to time 5; Subject Matter Well Organized   5;

Oration,   35: Clarity and Presentation 20; Voice Inflection/Enunciation 10;
Emphasis   5

Manuscript,   10: Wallet - Size Photograph, Name, Address, Phone Number, School Attending, Grade, list of Activities and Sponsoring Club 5; Neatness - Legibility (a plastic folder keeps manuscripts neat) 5 

Eligibility Contests are open to High School students attending 9th through 12th grades. A single member garden club; group of member clubs, councils or districts; or a State Garden Club must sponsor the contest. All entries become the property of National Garden Clubs, Inc.  

A $1,000.00 National Garden Club scholarship will be awarded the national winner. If the winner is an underclassman, the $1,000.00 scholarship will be held by NGC, Inc., without accrued interest, until such time the student enters college. At that time, the money will be forwarded to the Financial Aid Office of the college that the student will enter. Second place winners will receive a $100.00 award. 

Contest Deadlines: Club entries must be sent to State Chairman. Observe State Deadlines. State winners must be sent to Regional Chairman by January 1. Regional winners must be sent to National Chairman by February 1. All entries should list Name, Address, Phone Number, and School Grade and must follow Scale of Points.
